Looking to purchase a used Nitro bass boat with a 2002 Mercury 2-stroke 90 on the back. Owner stated he has just done a compression check and she has near 110 on all cylinders. Does any one know the stats on what the compression should be? The fact that all cylinders are equal is a good sign. Also, it this era motor EFI or carb?

The fuel injected model would be called the Optimax and for your compression, its good they are equal. 110 is a little worn but not so bad.

My last engine was just that and and as I replied above, my compression numbers were 110 with a tight average. Read the post I answered last night for more information....actually there are two that you might want to read. The engine has an onboard oil tank and internal oil pump. I kept Sea Foam added to my gas and it really kept things squeaky clean. Well worth the few bucks it added to my enjoyment. My engine was first start in the morning and first hole shot of the day cold natured. Once past that it ran like a scalded ape and started faster than I could get my fingers off the key the rest of the day.

One reason for my problem probably was the fact that I didn't go out all that often, like once every month or so and even with proper starting procedures and proven functioning starting aids it took time to get adequate fuel to the combustion chambers. Very good looper with low fuel consumption. Great, reliable, and fast. Had that 3 cylinder purr.

Edit: Don't take offense to this, but a 2 banger is a two cylinder...2 bangs. The 90 should be addressed as a 3 banger....that's how your post got my attention. 2 cycle engines that burn lubricating oil as part of the combustion cycle are referred to as 2 Stroke in today's world.
