I just bought this motor and having a little trouble starting when cold .Could someone give me the official starting procedure for this motor . I hear there is one but I cant find it . Its a 2002 merc 150 saltwater. I had a 96 Johnson before and had no problem just choke it and it started . This is a different critter. After I get it started it just takes a touch of the key and it fires right up and runs great .

Here is the owners manual for your engine, manual 10126Z20:

MH, thank you, much appreciated!

Hughes;

This is the first time I have heard of a problem and am sorry you experienced it but I use 4 shared all the time and have just downloaded the same file that you did without any hint of a problem.

Adware would have been more correct than virus . I didn't like it changing my computer setting. Im sure you were unaware. No hard feelings .

Re: 2002 merc starting procedure

1) Squeeze primer bulb until firm
2) Raise fast idle lever about 1/3 up
3) Turn key to RUN (not START)
4) Push in on key and hold for a count of 8 - 10 (this is what primes the engine and functions much like a choke woujld)
5) Turn key to START
6) When engine fires lower fast idle lever to a slightly fast idle. Be ready to bump the key (push in momentarily) if the engine begins to die. Don't wait until it dies to do this. Your ears tell you if the engine is beginning to quit.
7) When warm, fully lower fast idle lever and go boating.

There is an option for #4. That is to hold the key in WHILE you crank the engine. Somewhat faster starting may occur using the procedure as stated.
