2002 Mercury 2 Stroke 125 Horsepower - Alarm noise when Engine Running

I have a 125 HP Mercury that has not been ran in about 14 months. Put in water yesterday. Problem only when engine is running, problem does not exist until engine is running. Load alarm noise when engine cranks. When engine cranked for the 1st time there was a lot of smoke at the engine but not now. Took awhile to get engine to crank. Approximately 20 attempts to keep it running. Engine would start and run 3-5 seconds and then die. Eventually had to put engine in neutral and put at 1/2 throttle to keep it running. When i did this the engine stayed running but alarm started about 10 seconds after that. Ran engine and boat for another 10 minutes and alarm will not go off. Engine seems to be running fine, water pump looks to be working. Anyone got any ideas what the alarm noise is ?

Does the oil tank have oil in it?
Is it a 4 cylinder 2 strk?
What is the model #
Any motor that sat for 14 months and is that hard to start needs to be gone through. If you do it yourself get the factory service manual.

Don't run it until you get it figured out, ten minutes of running can destroy the motor.

To get the terms straight. Cranking is having the starter spin the motor, starting is the next step. So I assume you meant it took a while for it to start, and when it did start there was a good deal of smoke.

You will probably need to clean the carbs.

Fuel is the main issue at 14 months of storage, especially if left in the engine.....varnish. Carb kits, preferred to install a water pump kit, flush all the lines from the fuel in the tank to the carb inputs.
Next is a bad impeller in the water pump. The impeller will take a "set" and not conform to the shape of the pump housing making for low volume/pressure cooling water.
The Over Temp alarm is always a solid horn 11111111111111. Even if you had no water pump installed, it should take some time for the alarm to sound....long enough for the temperature of the block water jacket to reach 195F, it wouldn't sound immediately on a cold engine.
If you have an engine without the oil level sensor module you could have a false or low oil alarm....problem with the built in tank under the cowl. If you have a modulating module the oil failure alarm would be 10101010101 rather than 11111111111, like the OT.

My motor alarm will sound continuously on any four conditions -- over heating, low or high battery amp, low oil pressure, over revving. Or the alarm may be faulty. Yours is not overheating or over revving, so it could be low oil or the battery amp, or the alarm malfunctioning.

Wow. My last engine was the 2002 90 3 cyl and all it had connected to the alarm was oil and OT. Looking at the service manual covering 75 through 125 engines, I couldn't find sensors for all those functions. Must have missed it.

I think you are discussing a different motor
