2002 optimax 225 water pump

When I drop the engine into the water it immediately starts pumping water. However, when I get it home and flush it out it will no longer pump water. It has in the past but does not now.

The flush gasket (or whatever its called) appears to be in the same condition it has always been in.

What's going on?
