I am rebuilding a 2003 5.7GI-C engine -(serial 4012080761) - and am installing the engine circulating pump.

On the water pump there is a small passage on the fuel pump side that is not on the alternator side.

The old block had a passage where this went into the block.

On the new reman shortblock there is no passage, and where it would be is flat metal.

Both are 880 GM roller lifter blocks.

I am guessing that this is some preheat/bypass passage.

Does this passage need to be there, indicating I would have to drill it in the reman shortblock

thanks -- Dale

Post a picture of the port you are referring to, and no, don't start drilling the block.

As you can see these is no hole drilled in the block corresponding to the extra passage in the water pump

Ok, that's the port I thought you were referring to. It's not needed. Just install the pump and gasket, it will be blocked off.

thanks Don == I thought that would be the case -- I Just thought it odd that my old block did have that passage.

I may also have a few more general questions as I put it all back together -- I have done this once or twice but when you take it apart and don't get to put it together until six month later --- some little things don't get remembered -- especially when you have LOTS of gray hair.

thanks again
