What makes you think the reason it smokes is valves?

Is what she said dealer told her, and it was smoking as well, maybe they were ripping her off?? Dunno.

They probably offered her next to nothing for it. I hope you picked it up. I do not know what is wrong with it but with only 88k miles I doubt it is the valves.

Toyota had real problems with sludging due to EGR, when it first came out. Is that one of the years? Could that be the issue?

Not positive, but I think they had it fixed by then. That was a concern with the admiral's little 2000 ES 300. Great car, but we always tried to keep up with the oil changes religiously.

ln, thanks. I don't buy Toyotas, and none of my GMs ever had that issue, so I wasn't sure what years it affected. Hence the reason I asked it as a legitimate question. ;)

It wasn't the EGR but the crankcase ventilation system. Of course if you changed your oil every 5K you wouldn't have the problem anyway.

Yeah, that's what it was. The mandate was to keep the oil changed so it wouldn't become too thick to pass through the little ports.

It was the combination of Toyota (and BMW and others) stretching oil changes to over 5000 mile (7500, I think) and the introducing of EGR, which cooked the oil in the PCV system and plugged them up.

EGR has been around since the 70s and has nothing to do with the crankcase ventialtion. It introduces exhaust gas into the intake system.

The sludging was caused by crankcase ventilation system particularly PCV valves that were getting plugged up.

Well, I'm pretty sure the issue Bruce described that we avoided by keeping the erl changed was unique to Yota V6 engines of a certain vintage. As I recall the weep holes were so small that if the oil became too viscous it wouldn't go through them. That's my very rudimentary layman's understanding of the potential issue.

Whatever caused it, it shouldn't be an issue anymore. That was an issue in the early 2000 model years.

if it was the valves then its just a valve oil seal change and that can probberly be done with out removing the head. maybe the motor was on original oil so buying a new car is like changing the oil
