Hey guys, my engine wouldnt stay running after i started it so i started giving it some throttle to get it started. This kept it from stalling for a while, but eventually it did. I tried starting it again and it went a little above 5500RPM, then stalled and it says Check Engine. I cannot start the engine now, when i turn the key it just flashes check engine. What's going on? Thanks.

It the engine rpm raced and the throttle was pulled back quickly, the motor will go into a Code 57 shut down. A laptop or Palm Pilot is needed to clear the code so the motor will start again. See your dealer.<br /><br />Code 57 is a safety feature to keep the motor from "running away" should a fuel leak send extra gas into the cylinders. If the computer "sees" high rpm and a closed throttle after a period of time, it shuts off the motor until the code is cleared and the problem resolved.

Check for spark. Turn the engine over and listen for the injectors to fire. The most common failure on that engine is an ecu failure. Code 81-86. You can have the ecu rebuilt or updated. No spark all cylinders is a code 81-86.

i know it's a code 57......it's not that it doesn't spark, it doesn't turn at all...fuel pumps don't even run, it doesn't do anything. How do I have it updated/reset?

If you do not want to take it to a dealer under warranty, and you want to do it yourself, you will need the factory service manual, a laptop with a serial port that will run DOS, not Win XP, the software and instruction guide, and the interface cable. You can also buy a Palm, the CD software, adapter cable to fit the interface cable, and you will need a computer to transfer the files to the Palm. See an authorized dealer or an online selling one, such as<br /><br />johnsonmarine.com<br /><br />bluewaterboat.com<br /><br />stoneandson.com<br /><br />There have been several good articles in Trailer Boats and Bass and Walleye Boats magazines showing how to diagnose a FICHT.
