This is my first boat, bought last summer and it ran flawlessly. Started for the first time after a long six month winter and the engine had a knocking sound when I revved it. Am I in some trouble or is it common coming off a winter lay-up. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

don't think a knocking sound in any Engine is a good thing, have you tried it in the water?

I let it warm up for about 10 mins with the hose and muffs, then started giving it some throtle to see if it would run smoothly, 3500 to 4000 rpm. Maybe revved was the wrong term. Should I not have done that?? It seemed to run fine, a little hesitation when I throtled it up, but ran really smooth, didnt stall or anything.Don't really no much about outboards unfortunatley. Never ran it out of the water before. Do the engines sound much different running in the water as apposed to out with the muffs. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I guess mostly reving an Engine out of the water is not recomended for a variety of reasons, but best off to put the Boat in the water, start it up and see/hear whats going on, if it has a knock as you mention, and you know nothing about Outboards, then a trip to the Dealer is in order for you, a few dollars now could save a bucket of parts in the near future, from my experience, knocking noises can sometimes be followed by internal parts becoming external parts real quick (but not always) and at least you will have some peace of mind that all is well after a trip to the "doctors"

Do NOT run the engine (in gear or in neutral) higher than 1200 RPMs while on the muffs. Read your owners manual.
