2003 Yamaha outboard value on deck boat.

hello everyone, I found a deck boat yesterday, and the asking price was $9,000.00 cash.

It has a fully rebuilt Yamaha 3.1L motor on it.
The mechanic was telling me the motor itself was worth $6,500.00 and he could sell it in less than 24 hours.

And the trailer was valued at $2,500.00
also has a fully operational trolling motor.

problems with the boat...

Radio and speakers do not work.
Tachometer does not work
MPH Guage does not work...
toilet that is located in the back left of the boat, is also missing.

Seats have no rips but have some wear on them probably needs to be replaced in the next 2-3 years.
(this is to be expected with the age of the boat)

The boat is a 03 hurricane 226R deck boat.

We took it for a lake run, and it ran flawlessly,
the motor has some major power that really pushes you across the water.

Please excuse the crappy pictures. I meant to take some while on the boat but I forgot untill he was closed.

radio, tachometer, MPH guage do not work on a $9,000.00 boat. Is this a bigger sign of something wrong? Or just need to be replaced?

first, there are many models of hurricane deck boats

please be more specific.

Inboard or outboard (yes, it makes a difference in troubleshooting)

My guess you just bought the boat, and didnt check these issues out prior to puchase

what trouble shooting have you done?
the speedometer usually is a pitot tube gauge, not working could be as simple as the pitot pickup is flipped up
the engine tachometer is powered off the ignition switch and gets its signal from the negative side of the coil if its an I/O or from the stater assembly if its an outboard. start by making sure there is power to the gauge
the radio should be powered by the fuse block, and either comes on with the ignition switch or may be wired to an auxiliary switch.

take a test light or multi-meter and start troubleshooting

Sounds like a lot of stuff don't work....and a rebuilt motor would raise questions in my mind....

ok, so you started two different threads and a mod combined them.

a brand new aluminum trailer is only $2500 down here in Florida, so unless the trailer is brand new, its not worth $2500

the mechanic will say anything to get someone to buy something

portable toilets are about $115

back on to the troubleshooting.

since you have an outboard, you will need to check the gauge for power, then if so, check for signals from the motor

Red flag #1 - its a 17 year old boat, what do you expect?

Red flag #2 - all that stuff don't work.

Red flag #3 - $9 grand you got to be kidding.

Red flag #4 - the motor is rebuilt. Obviously that's why nothing works because the PO didn't take care of anything.

Red flag #5 - the "mechanic" says he can get....yada yada it worth yada yada.

The mechanic should buy it and part it out and he could make a lot of money.

FREE BOAT ALERT

$6.5K for the motor and $2.5K for the trailer means your buying a motor and trailer for 9 grand and a free boat.

So ... I'm apparently going to go a different direction here ...

I did a little looking - those Hurricanes seem to hold their value. I've used one before, and I really liked it. But I don't know if I like it $9k worth. Everything working, and the boat in really good condition, I think the $9k number might actually be in the ballpark (surprised as I am to say).

There might be a buncha' red flags on this boat, but the price may not be crazy out of line. If you could get a $1,500 knocked off, it might actually be a reasonable deal for that Hurricane.

You can get other boats - similar - less expensive, for sure.

I consider the stuff that doesn't work to be pretty minor. If you like the boat otherwise, don't use that stuff as an excuse not to buy the boat. That could be something as simple as a couple of fuses or a broken wire.

First red flag here would be the rebuilt motor. I doubt seriously it was worn out, so the reason it was rebuilt? Who did the rebuild? Warranty? Work order showing exactly what was done, what EXACTLY was rebuilt? If there is no copy of the work order available, and it was done by a dealer, betting it wouldn't take too much to get a copy of the work order from the dealer.

Then, there's the matter of the interior. I don't think you know what replacing that involves. Think $$$$$$!

Unless you are qualified yourself, you might consider hiring a DIFFERENT mechanic to go over the boat and provide his thoughts on the purchase, and see if he spots anything you haven't. Like a weak spot in the floor for instance....

Oh, and I love deck boats! Good ones are expensive....

WOW

When someone tells me they could sell something in 24 hours, my first thought is . . . "if so, then why didn't you ???"

Sounds like you were dying to give your money away. You know you could have just sent it to me and I could have bought a boat load of beer for the summer and sent you some pictures from out on the water :)

With the money left over after the beer, I could have gotten a whole new GM 7.4L long block for $6,500 . . . now I'm going to have to wait.

Scott danforth-
Sorry I didn't include that it was an outboard, I linked pictures that showed the motor.
thanks for the information though.

JimS123-Thanks for the input.

Southcogs- I appreciate the info sir, that really helps.

Ahicks- I appreciate the feedback,
I was looking for a boat I can fish with, cruise with and pull tubes with and it seems to fit 10 people +. Kinda checks all the boxes for me, as far as the upholstery my uncle works at a upholstery shop, all i have to buy is material, and thats $680.00. Labor was free.

Tpenfield- mmm, strange assumption that I bought the boat...
thats why I posted this.
I didn't buy that boat, and still haven't bought one.
Goodluck buying your own beer for the summer.

Ah rats on the beer, good thing the liquor stores are an 'essential business' in my area. . . .

Not sure why I was thinking you bought the boat though . . . :noidea:

By the sounds of it though, I'd stay away from the mechanic guy you've been talking to.

^^^^ I do agree with that:

While I say the price of the boat may not be too far off, I'm not nuts about the "I could do this ... if I wanted" pressure tactic. There's always another boat out there, and there are alway options that are good out there. Don't get pressured on this boat.
