What WOT engine speed should I be aiming for when selecting a prop pitch?

I currently have a Viper 14-3/4" x 19" on a
Cape Horn 17 with a WOT engine speed of 5000 rpm. I was expecting 5500 rpm. I checked the throttle linkage, and the carb blades are fully open at maximum throttle setting. Does 5000 rpm sound right, or do I have a underperforming engine? At WOT, the OB sounds very good without any indication of laboring or misfire.

Thanks for any input.

I would say that 5K is on the low side, if you are lightly loaded.

It should be on the upside of 5500 for a lightly loaded boat.

Will double oiling affect the WOT engine speed?

The OB also stalls when shifting into reverse. Could this be related?

Check the shift switch.
