I have a 2003 merc 40 hp 3 cyl 2 stroke that I just purchased. The model is 40M it has a manual start pull rope primer etc. It also has a starter with controls. You can key start the motor or have key turned and start by pulling the rope. My question is does this motor have an alternator and if the battery is dead is there any damage done by pull starting the rope. Last question do I have to have it hooked up to a battery? Thanks!!

No, it will not hurt the motor and no you do not have to hook up to a battery. I don't enjoy pulling so I use a battery. I have a 25 hp that has both the starter and the pull rope and only I only pull start when the battery is dead but after running it for a while the battery will re-charge itself (if the battery is any good). Please get a battery and save your shoulder.

If your motor is set up for electric start, that means it has a charging system which includes a rectifier/regulator. Althought the engine will run without a battery, it will toast the rectifier/regulator if you run it without a battery.
