My father just bought a new 9.9m Merc. He also bought a 15 carb for it. The motor ran fine. Then he switched the carb by following the merc manual and now it will not run. It started and ran for 5 sec. then died. will not restart. he took the 15 carb off then put the 9.9 back on. won't run either. he has spark, fuel in the carb, open throttle plate. what could be the problem? we noticed the idle rod that goes to the magneto under the flywheel has some play in it. Any advice appreciated. We do have a call in to a mechanic, but hope it's something simple we can do first. He claims he didn't touch anything else in the motor except the carb and its appendages.

It acts like a fuel pump problem. I'm not familiar with that motor, but if the fuel pump is integral with the carb, check the intake gasket, or just replace it (they can't be re-used because they compress). <br />If the fuel pump is a stand-allone type, pull the discharge side of at the carb, and turn it over. Yoou should get pulses of fuel. Check the pulse line from the fuel pump to the crankcase too, for a kink, air leak or plug.

Thanks, will check that stuff. When I say it is dead, it won't even attempt to start when you pull the rope. You can see/smell fuel so you would think it would at least turn over before stalling.
