About to buy a 2003 Boston Whaler 130 Sport with a 2003 Mercury 40 hp outboard. With the standard 14" black max prop the boat is said to do 35 mph. I will be buying a prop just for towing. When buying a prop that will just be used for water sports should I keep the pitch at 14" or should I lower it to a 13" or 12"?

The Whaler 130 test says The motor with a 14 is turning 6000 rpm at 34.9 mph.
I think I would wait and see what it does with the 14. and adjust at that point.

Ok so would a Mercury Spitfire 14" prop provide better holeshot than the 14" black max?

Since the WOT range for that motor is 4500-5500, you will need to verify what rpm it is turning before deciding what pitch 4 blade to use.

It is generally recommended to drop an inch of pitch when going to a 4 blade. But if the motor is actually turning that high, you should stay with 14" to bring the rpm down a little with the 4 blade.

That test shown on the Merc web site was with a 4 stroke motor; not a 2 stroke. Your 2 stroke motor should perform better across the entire rpm band than the 4 stroke. :)

I’d say forget everything you’ve been told or what’s been said. Test it out for yourself, as she is just now, first. Take it from there. Otherwise, your as good as throwing money away on a prop. Hope that helps.

Yep test as QBhoy suggests while pulling water toys on flat calm waters and check what's the wot rpm achieved on such test with current prop, will know how much pitch to drop from there for motor to rev to its full wot rpm range factory stated. Depending on "how much fun and speed scenario" you intend to achieve while pulling toys with a toon, won't be a good idea carrying to much passengers on board at same time. Need to compensate the additional water toys drag with less passengers while the motor revs happily inside its middle to max wot rpm range.

Happy Boating
