Someone told me I should disconnect the oil resevoir and run the oil in with the gas! They said there has been some issues with the oil resevoir's not working and burning the motors up.Motor has about 50 hrs. on it,and prevoius owner ran oil in gas with the resevoir also putting oil in fuel. When I cleaned the carbs they had alot of oil in them.I also heard that when you buy a new 2-stroke you should run them like this for alittle while than use straight gas with the oil resevoir. What do you think?

Just why do you think the engine was manufactured with the oil injection system?? It's because it works, it is very convenient, and it works just fine. At 50 hours the engine is hardly broken-in and the last thing you need to worry about is removing a perfectly good system. The reason the previous owner doubled up on the oil is for break-in purposes. You don't need to do that since the engine is now broken-in. The engine was designed with a very good oil injection system. Can it fail -- certainly, but so can lots of other things on the engine yet you apparently are not concerned about those. Failure to use fuel system treatments for example can result in crud build up in carbs and injection systems. That can burn down an engine due to a lead fuel mixture. I'll wager you never use the stuff! You can also break a leg and I'm reasonably certain you would not amputate one of yours to prevent that from happening would you??? The only fault with oil injection is that owners don't keep oil in them and when the alarm goes off they can't imagine why (generally because they don't what the alarms mean). There is nothing inherently wrong with the system and there is also no reason to add oil to the fuel if the oil injection is known to be working. Leave it alone and go boating. As a test of the system, place a mark on the oil resevoir at the current oil level. Run about six gallons of fuel through the engine and then add enough two stroke oil to bring the level back up to the line. If it took a pint of oil that says the mixture is 50:1 (roughly) and the system is working.

"Someone" is pulling your plonker.... The oil injection system on those engine is one of the best around. The only issue they have is the magnet falls off the bottom of the float and gives a false 'oil low' alarm. As ST says, use the boat, have fun, and stop worrying about BS being told to you....

Thanks for the info, thats how life is.You get good info and bad info.I do use treatment in all my boats and ethanol hoses, run my engines on micron fuel water filters.I'm a yamaha/Suzuki guy, motor just came with the boat, better to be safe than sorry "like a broken leg" ? We would go in and hump the bush to get them out,not sit back in a boat and shoot at them.Have the scars to show for it.Thanks for the info!

With the Low/No oil alarm. Is there any way to test it without running out of oil?
I have recently bought a 03 merc 90 2str and don't intend on running it out of oil but I would like to know what the alarm sounds like and make sure its working.

Also is there an easy way to have a 10L tank inside the boat to make sure I have got heaps of oil to spare?

Unplug the 2 blue wires going to oil tank and install a jumper between them on module side, turn key on and alarm will sound.

Not really as this is a gravity feed system not a pressure system like the larger V-6 engines
