2003 Mercury Extended warranty

Mercury has sent an offer for an extended warranty for my 2003 200 HP Mercury 2 stroke. Ithas various terms out to 5 years for a little over $2400. That sure seems a high price tag but considering what I've seen here for some repairs maybe it's worth it. I admit that I don't have a whole lot of repair experience on outboards and probably would have to rely on professional repairs for anything other than routine maintenance. Are Mercury's that prone to repairs to make the cost worth it? I had a '82 Johnson 115 HP and probably didn't spend $1000 for repairs in 20 years!! Would like some opinions, especially from the marine mechanics we have on here, about the warranty's worth/value. Thanks in advance.<br /><br />Ken

Generally speaking...if the engine is going to fail it will do it within the first year. Parts defects ect, will cause damage right from day one.<br />We have sold extended warranties but its pretty rare. Only 1 new engine that we have sold has failed. 3rd month.<br /><br />Peace of mind...or risk?<br /><br />TMD

Marlin, It looks to me like a lot of the troubles being chased after here have to do with Mercury warranty support--or lack of it. We keep reading about new owners whose dealer can't find the problem, then having to wait for weeks at a time for a factory rep who may not even know what he's doing.<br />As you can tell, I think the $2400 is a bad investment.

Thanks for your replies and I think I've got a direction. Right now, after about 2 1/2 months use, it seems to be running great. I did have it in for losing power as I applied more throttle but that seems to have been corrected. It did it once after I got it back but hasn't did it in about a month. Thanks again.
