Talking with a dealer who has a new in box 2003 optimax 125 for just under 6 grand. Dont know much about the newer motors, have heard to stay away from earlier (99?-01yrs)optimax.

Is this a good motor? Would Yamaha, other be a better choice?

thanks.

Re: 2003 optimax 125hp

I don't think there is such a thing as a 125 Optimax. The 125 (no longer made) was a 4 cyl., 105 cid. carbureted ONLY motor, as far as I know. In case you don't know, "Optimax" is the name Mercury Marine gave to their version of the high pressure, direct-injection fuel delivery system for 2 stroke motors. Maybe he meant a 135 Optimax? If it is a nib 135, that is a SCREAMING deal! A carbureted 125 for that amount is also a good deal, just not as unbelievable as that price for a 135 Optimax.

Incidently, a good, used 4-cyl. 125 is what I was looking for for my boat. Couldn't find one, so I "settled" for an IL6 1987 115. Couldn't be happier with it, but I do wish I had the little extra top end that a 125 would have provided.

TG

The dealer was was not very much help. Thought he said it wrong-even asked him "sure its an optimax?".

Think I will call back and see if I can talk w/different salesman.
SO 5995. for 125 2003 not too bad? Must be the "classic" model

I see that in 06 the 125 was dropped.
I prob should have posted this topic in "non repair" as I am really looking for input re Yamaha 90 or 115 as a comparison.
thanks.
