Hello, looking for some help/advice from the Suzuki experts. I have the opportunity to get a 2003 115 4 stroke very cheap. Without any special tools im assuming there is no way to determine how many hours are on the engine? I will do a compression test ( what should the PSI be?) I will hear it run and take a test run on the boat its on tomorrow. What else should I check out? Estimated hours are 2000, id be happy if it lasted a year or 2 (for the price Im getting it for) till I can afford to re-power my Boston Whaler Outrage with a new one. Any advice would be a big help as I have never had any experience with a 4 stroke (got 30 years 2 stroke experience) but a newbie with the new stuff, thanks... Rich

I would have a leak down test done on the cylinders instead of the compression test , that will give you a lot more info and have them hook up a computer to the motor if it has that option to see what all it has to say.
Also see what all maintenance records are available and who did it all and when.

You may want to know about (or ask a mechanic about) my recent trouble with a Suzuki 115 at http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=451090 Despite all that, I'll probably end up buying another one. It's been a great motor till now.

I sent you a private message from parrotthead about his similar troubles. If you'd like, I can forward you photos by e-mail that he sent to show me where the problem was.

if the engine is fitted with a Suzuki tach, the hours can be displayed. Unfortunately you need the service manual to determine how. I sold my Suzy and let the manual go with it and I've forgotten how its done. The tach needle displays the hours.

Thanks for the replies, for $650.00 I took the engine with controls, stainless prop and gauge, took it on a sea trial and it ran fine, will check it out further when I get it set up in my shop. Even if I use it for parts im ahead of the game..

update, got the engine for 400.00, it has the dreaded engine holder corrosion.NO water in the oil but the outside where the plug is has the corrosion. My winter project is to fix her. I have the factory service manual. Anybody tackle this job on there own?
