Re: 2003 Yamaha 150 hdpi

Most everyone who own the 150-200 hpdi's are very happy with them.
It's the big block 250-300 hpdi's that seem to be hit or miss.

Good luck... Canuck 16.

Re: 2003 Yamaha 150 hdpi

its a maint intensive motor. ask about the 100Hr/6month and 200/1 yr services.. if you intend to maintain this engine whether you use it 5 hours a year or 200 it will work ok. if not you will have problems.
good luck and keep posting

Re: 2003 Yamaha 150 hdpi

rodbolt - Can you be a little more specific? Mine is at 120 hours. I've:

Change LU oil
Checked plugs
Greased everything
Replaced fuel water sep
Checked oil/water sep
Considering your O2 sensor cleaning
Not fogging or anything - using it over the winter.

What else is there that makes it maintenance intensive vs. other motors?

Re: 2003 Yamaha 150 hdpi

there is a filter in the VST that needs cleaning as well as an inline filter between the VST and the high pressure pump. there is an oil filter between the pump and the small electric oil pump as well as a filter on the remote oil tank. there is a filter in the engine oil tank and maint for the sensor.
sometimes the maint is high but if one of the filters clogs it can lead to an early demise of the power head. last time I looked the inline medium pressure filter was about $180.00. most HPDI motors that run over 75-100 hours without O2 sensor cleaning develop plug fouling problems.
good luck and keep posting

Thanks rodbolt - Based on your comment "most HPDI motors that run over 75-100 hours without O2 sensor cleaning develop plug fouling problems." - I will pursue your good cleaning instructions here shortly.

As far as the filters - Do they need inspection and cleaning at 120 hours? I am careful with my fuel and oil, and run ring free at 1oz to 10 gallons gas.

My expectation is that I can perform the 100 hour routines, change the impeller every 200 or so, and take it in every 400 - 500 or so for a run through by the Yamaha tech.

Is that unrealistic on this motor?

Re: 2003 Yamaha 150 hdpi

so far there is no recomendation on the inline medium pressure filter. I think they are afraid to tell people about a 200 dollar fuel filter.
the VST needs cleaning every 200 hours or yearly. most the rest is in your maint schedule. good luck and also let me know how the pressure relief valve inspection goes. I finally got it down to less than 1 hour :) :)

anothe quick one. dont let the VST pump sit with bad gas. if it locks up and cant be freed a new one is about 700 dollars. I just replaced 2:)

Re: 2003 Yamaha 150 hdpi

Have the high pressure fuel pump issues been resolved with HPDI? My understanding was there were problems at least the first couple years of manufacture. I believe the output pressure of the fuel pumps is 700 or 800 psi. Seems likely they aren't going to last forever.

Re: 2003 Yamaha 150 hdpi

never heard of a high pressure pump problem. that pump was used on certain mitsubishi's for 20 years. I just did the 1000 hour oil change on a pair of them and was no worries. however thgis is going to be the 4th O2 sensor on the pair.
good luck and keep posting
ps yep about 700 psi and the 250-300 is about 1100.
