I have a 2004, 125hp Merc which has been sitting idle for (gasp) almost 2 years. (I've been sick) I am ready to go, but when I started it up on the ear muffs, I noticed that I was getting little or no smoke. I first checked to see if oil was coming out of the resevoir, and it was. Then checked to see if it was getting to the pump, and it was. Then I took the line off the junction point where the oil and fuel mix to see if oil was being pumped out. It wasn't, however, I only turned the engine over without the clip on the run switch. I don't know if the engine needs to be running to properly diagnose the oil pump or not? If the oil pump is bad, can it be worked on to save some money? If not, has anyone replaced the pump, and if so please give suggestions.

Thanks -1bigbird

With the engine running at idle, it'll drip about a drop every few seconds. You won't get enough over line leakage spillage at cranking to tell if it's working.

When you suspect oil system troubles, run the engine on 50:1 fuel/oil mix. If the oiler is working, it'll be double oiled. If it isn't working, you will do no harm.

There is a complete oil system checkout procedure in the maintenance manual

Hope it helps
