I bought this motor knowing about this noise, Ive rolled the flywheel around on each cylinder I feel no play, Ive rocked it no play. compression is Left bank: 120 120 110 Right bank 120 120 120. Runs fine. when You turn it over there is no wobble at flywheel Could this be a spun bearing? is this motor worth repairing? The tick sounds like a lifter noise on a car TICK TICK TICK ....does not get louder at wot just speeds up. I know I have the correct plugs but I have not pulled heads off yet to look inside. I realize its impossible to diagnose with out hearing, But was hoping someone has been down this road.

Ive read that these power heads are built very well. any suggestions on ruling out possible simple causes or is it a basket case....

pdx1:

Are you positive the noise is coming from the powerhead or elsewhere?

Have you checked the LU oil for increased amount of metal particles, possibly indicating a problem in the drive train?

Can you feel/associate any vibrations on the fuel pump body?

Type "ticking noise" in the serach engine at the top RH side of this page and see a few recent cases of a similar problem.

Yeah I dropped lower unit, I do have a problem with Impeller not pumping well, going to install new impeller. fired it still there. just a small tick, Enough to worry installing on a boat and having it go south on me first day out. I will do a search thanks

The motor has roller bearings. They don't spin like I think you're thinking a car bearing spins. How loud is the tick. Does it get louder without the intake cover on?. Reeds tick and a bad one will be more prominent.

Is it carbed or injected? I've heard some pretty noisy injectors and you do have one cylinder that is down a little on compression. It could be that injector causing a lean condition that's causing the more than usual wear at that cylinder.

You might also check the oil pump.

Thanks Steve,
Yeah its a Carbed motor, I was wondering if that one cylinder was maybe the culprit. I took a hose and listened all around the power head from crank forward, sound did not changed or get louder in any cylinder or at crank. I rolled the dice on this figured it was a no brainier buy. would never be able to afford this motor in perfect condition. So I'm not disappointed but would like to figure it out. would be a nice motor to have around if the right Aluminum boat came my way. how does that auto inject work? how does it know how much oil to inject behind reeds? off crank or? if nothing else it could be front room art on a nice stand!!
