I'm still working with the local dealer on my 'vibration and smoke issues'.

Recap: The motor vibrates (intermittantly but more often than not) and frequently smokes excessivly after a 30-45 minute rest, and smokes non stop even when warm - [water temp has minimal effect].

The dealer [Crystal Pierz Marine] has gone to bat for me and is bending over backwards for me on many levels, even Ranger offered a discount on a new boat to 'maintain a satisfied customer' and it's not even their problem, but to date, Yamaha can't find the problem and will do NOTHING for me - After their trouble shooting was unable to determine the problem, they claim it's operating within spec and won't offer any resolution period.

Redbolt, the dealers mechanics are Yamaha certifed and did everthing Yamaha said and the problem is reportedly worse than better. I wish I was in your area, if I were I would love to let you look at it.

Anyway, I'm still not happy with Yamaha and the chance that I will ever be a supporter is rapidly deminishing! Buyer Beware!

Re: 2004 225 OX66 update

have them check or replace the oil pump shaft seal. takes 20 minutes. occasionally they fail and tend to leak oil into the crankcase. an oil consumption test can find it. also most the oil control rods on the 3.1 L motors need to be modified to allow the control lever to be set properly.
I am thinking your techs dont have much experience with large V6 motors. with a VOM and a winky blinky you can quickly rule out what is not wrong so you can concentrate on what is wrong.
have you monitored oil usage to fuel usage? its not as accurate as a true oil consumption test but it should average out to about 3 qts per 50 gallons.slightly more with all WOT time and slightly less with a lot of trolling.
has the O2 sensor output voltage and heater voltages been monitored while in the water, flusher tests are a waste of time for an O2 sensor reading. cannot be done.
this motor, like all piston engines, is very simple. it sucks, squeezes, bangs and blows. all that other stuff attached to it just assists it in doing that.
it looks complex but its actually not.

rodbolt,

I will forward your suggestions to the mechanics, (and I will omit the reference to experience with v6 motors of course, ;) ). The unit was winterized and placed in their off site storage, waiting for the Yamaha outcome which is...you know. So weather or not they will be able to get to it in a timely mannor is questionable at this point. Meanwhile the battle continues.

We appreciate your phenomenal knowledge!!!
:D

ask if you can read their fuel and electrical work books they got while attending the yamaha fuel and electrical course. it covers the 3.1EFI fuel, oiling and ign systems and how it all works.
at the end of the course the training manual is the students. if they did the course they have the manuals.
