2004 4 stroke

ji have a 2004 8 hp.4 stroke j8 r4 sr. only used for trolling, after trolling for 4 or so hrs at about 1 mph, it will die, restarts first pull, and runs fine for a few more hrs. dies again. has new plugs rp 10 hc gaped at .27 pull plugs they look oily. should they be gapped higher? thanks for any help.

If it were me, I'd check carb. Sounds like it may be running too rich.

Being a four stroke, you are NOT mixing oil with the gas are you? You'd be surprised how many folks that is still necessary even though they have a four stroke. If the plugs are oily, you would be wise to check the oil very frequently as oily plugs are a sign of high oil consumption. Running a four stroke low on oil is a "quick kill". After trolling continuously for four hours you would also be wise to quite fishing and go for a wide open throttle ride for 15 minutes to get rid of any excess fuel contamination in the engine oil (making oil).

thanks silvertip i run both motors off same tank/w a valve to keep lines as the main motor is aoil injected 40 hp, check oil every time out, seems to run fine after restart,will try wot on kicker longer.
