I have a 2004 monterey 265 with a 5.7 gxi engine. when i punch it to get on plane, it goes right away, then it cuts out for a second, then goes again. any ideas what that would be? i have replace the fuel filter. could it be bad spark plugs? it has 195 hours on it, and i think the plugs are original. it also seems like it is lacking in the power department. the rpms go up to 2500 right away, then it takes about 10-15 seconds to get them up to 3000 where i need them to be to get on plane. any thoughts or help would be much appreciated!!

You may be experiencing problems with your High Pressure Fuel Pump, or the entire Fuel Pump Assembly. Are you getting any "whining" noises? The inlet screen to the HP Fuel Pump can get clogged with debris. Additionally, you may have one of those fuel pumps that may have been painted internally and paint chips are coming off and clogging....

To my knowledge, I have not heard any whining noise from the fuel pump. how do i know or test it? could it be a misfire from a plug also??

Check fuel pressure with a gauge - roughly 55 psi. You could also check the fuel pressure regulator to see if the screen may have contaminants.

You will need to buy a manual for your boat, or find a mechanic to help. The fuel pressure is regulated to 55 psi most of the time.

Why does it seem like when this sort of problem comea up everyone points to fuel system right away? What about plugs wires or even and rotor? They could also cause a misfire right?

That's where the problems have been found by members of the board, that's why. You definitely need the manual and some tools if you are comfortable to work on it yourself, otherwise, enlist the help of a qualified Volvo Penta tech.
