Drive shits into reverse fine with no hesitation but when moving throttle into forward drive will not engage unless more throttle is applied then it will "jump" into gear. Needless to say, not the best option for docking...

Will be pulling out the manual tonight but any head start would be appreciated!

You may have a failing/stretched out lower shift cable to the stern drive, the drive shifting detent ball/shifting mechanism could have become sticky possibly due to water intrusion causing a rusty condition, Or the shifting yoke has become worn where it contacts the gears which will also wear down the back side of the gears. Sometimes using lapping compound may resolve gear slipping vs buying new gears.

It could very well be as Fun Times mentioned. I could also be you could readjust the shift cable and get it working fine. If you have one special tool you could give it a go. Have you tired to adjust?
