Never owned an Evinrude. Picked up a 2004 Triton TR21X after mechanic gave the outboard a clean bill of health. Now, for the oil. Someone mentioned these outboards are programmed to run a particular oil mix. I have no clue what they're saying. I don't want to just settle with Quicksilver dfi at academy. With that being said, can I run the Evinrude XD50 or XD100 in it without knowing what this program thing is, if it's even true? If I can run either without knowing for now, which is better recommended? Will one or both oils cover it either way? Thanks in advance.

You pour oil in the OIL TANK and the computer puts it in the motor as needed.-----XD100 or what a BRP dealer recommends.----Do not run / operate this motor until you have read the manual.

Yes sir. I'm aware it goes in the tank, but unaware of so many different oils. I'm not gonna dump the wrong stuff into it. I was just wondering if either the 50 or the 100 covered it regardless of a program.

I used the Yamalube mix for my Yamaha 150 and it was that simple. This is a whole new beast!

The mechanic who gave it a good bill of health should have been able to tell you that. Or find a dealer and have it scanned. If you have any doubts or cannot get it scanned right away run the xd 100.

Ok. That was what I wanted to know for now. I appreciate it. It looks like I can't go wrong with the 100. Seems to be the most recommended mix regardless. Thanks.

Be prepared to fall out of your chair when you see the price of a gallon of XD100....

You really need to find out what oil ratio the motor has been programmed to use. Dumping XD100 in a motor programmed to run 50:1 will send you to the poor house in no time.

I reality you an use any DFI rated oil that meets the programming requirements. Nothing wrong with running Opti oil in that motor. I think Opti runs cleaner than XD oils but I can buy case lots of XD for 20% less than the equivalent Merc Oil.

Lol. Yes I see that xd100 price, but worth the spend in my opinion until I can get a confirmation. I'll ask the mechanic. I didn't know to ask about the oil programmed. I knew nothing about that. I'm sure he would have told me . I learn something new every day. Not looking to buy another outboard. Lol.

That motor DOES NOT have an option to "program in" the oil type you are using.
I have the 2004 225HO Evinrude DI and I use XD-50.
