Hello all, Just set my engine down in the boat.
The next part is to wire the engine (Tach, Ignition, etc.)
Is this hard? Should i have a Mechanic do this? or would it be realistic for me to do this myself?
Never wired an engine.
Thanks for the feedback.

Could use a bit more info. Your statement could be interpreted the motor is installed and there is no wiring on it what so ever. So do you want to know how to wire the motor to the boat, or need to wire the motor and the boat?

Ok, so pretty much nothing is wired.
I just lowered the engine into the boat and wish to wire the motor to the boat.

OK, wiring the motor before dropping in is so much easier.
Need to get a custom harness or buy a premade one. Being a 2004 is this an MPI, TBI or carb motor? Sure hope its a carb

Also what happened to the original harness?

Its a MPI, the harness is still there. I'm just asking, if the harness is there will it be hard to wire the rest?

Thanks.

Could really use which MPI you have, to understand which ECM is on the motor. The MPI motor has two harnesses on it which are connected together at the motor. On page 4D-13 there is the engine harness which uses the round 10 pin cannon plug. On the lower right of the page identified with (a) is the connector to the MPI harness. Further in there are MPI harnesses for different motors. They are also for MEFI-1 an 2 ECMs

http://www.boatfix.com/merc/techbk/96/96hgd4.pdf

The wiring from the 10 pin harness to the gauges is basically the same and is also found further in the pdf file. If you have a MEFI-3 or 4 you will have a different engine MPI harness but the connection to the motor harness and the gauges are the same. Now if you have a PCM-555 then this is a bit different because there is a different connector.

Whether something is "hard" or not depends on your ability. If you are electrically challenged then one say yes -- it's hard. If you cannot follow a wiring diagram or schematic in a service manual, yes -- the project will be hard. Otherwise, no -- the project is not hard if you work with one circuit at a time and have the proper reference material (diagrams) at hand.
