I need to repower and I have a opportunity to purchase a brand new 2005 115hp Merc 4 stroke, my first choice would be a Yamaha but the Merc is a good price. I have heard the Merc is made by Yamaha, is this true? Is there any known issues with a Merc, are they crappy?
Thanks!
:)

i have that same engine...this was my first season with it but the boat was a left over so it was brand new...i had absolutly no problems with it this past season...i put about 60 hrs on it...i believe the power head is made by yamaha but the lower end is merc..always started up with no problems when its ideling in water u can barley hear it running except for the tell tale...it was also good on gas...i have it on a 18 ft trophy walkaround no complaints at all. i'd say go for it

Powerhead is a yammy. Good motors for sure, but make sure you use good gas and stabilize it when it's gonna be laid up for any length. The extremely small passages in the carbs will not tolerate any crud...

530 hours on the same engine over the past 3 years. No issues at all, very reliable. Take proper precautions though on fuel and stabilize it and also run a water separator. The gear ratio is somewhat high for the size of the engine (2-07:1). This means you will likely be running a lower pitched prop than many other engines.

Good catch Rob. I forgot that the 115's were injected. Even better reason to buy it...
