2005 25 Remote no neutral or reverse

My issue seems the same as alot of other posts on here but slightly different. Here's whats going on:

Had new impeller put on by merc mechanic - took the boat out reverse worked fine then later on the same trip the socket broke on the end of the linkage and I had no reverse or neutral. I took it back to the same mechanic and he removed the lower unit and starter and fixed it (or so I thought). Took it out again - reverse worked at first but later in the day the same thing happened, the same socket broke again and no forward or reverse. Any ideas why this is happening? All the posts I read on here with similar issues don't have the reverse and neutral work at all until everything is hooked up correctly. I can't figure out why it works at first then breaks later. I'm attaching pix of the broken socket to show which one is breaking.

Any ideas would be appreciated as I want to go fishing next week.

I went and bought a new socket end for the linkage and put i on but still can't get reverse. I can get forward and neutral but I have to pull the controls back slightly past neutral or I hear clicking in the lower unit - if I just pull from forward and click it into neutral I get the clicking. It won't go into reverse at all - it only goes maybe a half inch back (on the control that is) Also, the reverse lock stays engaged so the engine is locked down even when in forward gear......

I'm gonna have to take it back to the mechanic - can't figure out what the problem is.. I'll post what the issue is after I get it fixed so hopefully someone else can get help from this thread. This must be an odd issue because I haven't had any replys.
