Motor will start and run fine, but will not plane. When I start out slowly and give it a little throttle it will move along, but when I try to open it up it just revs up. I checked the fuel lines, cleaned carbs, cleaned plugs, tucked down and tilted up the motor. Also checked the prop to look at the hub, but it lookes ok to me. I was told that the motor will not allow you to plane if the water pump is bad, but it has a stream coming out and I get no alarms. A friend used it last month, and said it ran great for a while, but started smoking all the sudden and obviously got hot. It does not seem to have the same amount of pressure peeing out now, so I'm just not sure...please help

How do you know the prop is not slipping inside hub ? did you make the prop slip test. With bad water pump the boat will plane untill engine overheats, then will boog down... Is it a 3 cylinder 2 strokes engine ?

That is the first thing I thought of (prop slip). You answered my question about the water pump. Motor will just rev when I throttle to get up. It is a three cyl. 2 stroke tiller. About the impeller...would the motor not have an alarm if it overheats? Not sure why it started smoking and no alarm awhile back. Not sure how to do the slip test. May just take the prop in to have the hub replaced...good start. This motor has been a nightmare! Thank You so much

If not mistaken tiller models don't have an alarm, personally don't know thw 40 HP, only work with 2 cylinder single carb 40 C. If you haven't replaced impeller, it's time to do so, probably will need a complete water pump kit. Standard factory props are not repairable because hubs are vulcanized inside prop, must get a new one, it's like when your car's clutch slips, must change complete clutch. Is your model an auto lube or premix engine ?

Remove LU and impeller housing, depending condition, change impeller or complete water pump kit. If engine has overheated re torque head gasket to factory specs, would check thermostat condition too. When finished, make the hub test and see instant results.

Remove prop from shaft, draw a line or 2 dots with marker, red nail polish as seen (1-2) let dry, place back prop with pin, go for a short wot test, remove prop, check if marks has moved from where original were marked, if so confirmed spunned hub, replace for a new prop. Check at I boats Michigan Props for that engine, has models with repairable prop hubs, original props are not repairable.
