Haven t used the boat in a month or so, and I when I went out to get it ready the trim tilt was acting up. It was really slow and made some popping and creaking sounds, but did move at first. The trim got to about all the way out then the whole thing stopped... now it wont go up or down anymore.

When I hit the switch (up or down) the little motor comes on and sounds just like it should be moving, but nothing budges. for this reason I dont think its electrical.

I'm thinking a fluid leak?? there is some oily stuff around the left cylinder, and even pooled into a drip at one point.

How can I check / replace fluid? what kind of fluid should I use? can I do it with the motor down (as it wont go back up now).

thanks!

if there is oil present then you have a bad seal . you will need to get the outboard into full tilt up by using the manual release . it is on the transom assy. (the part bolted to the boat ) . i think on the starboard side . turn valve with flat head screwdriver and have a buddy lift the outboard from the gearcase . there is a little bracket to flip down and hold the full up position .

you can then work on the PTT unit . in the full up position the oil level should be level with the screw hole . (a flat head screw on the PTT assembly )

you may need to put oil in and then put the plug back in and run the motor to remove air from the system . don<t forget to turn the manual release valve back in . just repeat this till it will work .

if the leak is bad you need a yamaha tech to work on it . or do it yourself ( change the seals and/or o-rings)

ok, for the life of me I cant find the little flat head manual release screw.

Should I be able to see it with the tilt all the way down? Can someone point to where it would be on the attached photos?

Thanks a lot!

its cause your looking on the wrong side.
look down low on the other side(port) close to the transom. DO NOT back it out more than about 3 turns or you can destroy the unit.
the fill cap is visible on the trim fluid resevoir in the above picture.

OK, I got it, but like to finish off my threads so people searching in the future know the answer. I've seen so many old threads with the last post being a year later saying "well... did it work??" haha.

The manual release screw was in a very conspicuous location on the other side like rodbolt said. right on the side of the transom mount, not up inside the tilt/trim unit like I was looking for.

Problem was I couldnt get the screw loose. There was a little ring thing in it which I removed, but actually bent a screw driver trying to loosen it.

From there I decided to try and go ahead and add fluid with the motor down. As you can see from the pic below, I could see the resuvior fill, but it was fairly difficult to reach. I used some flexible hose and a funnel to pour a couple onces of fluid in it which allowed it to raise enough to fill it the rest of the way. I excercised the motor up and down a couple times b/c I read somewhere online that that would help get air bubles out.

After excercising it I opened the cap and white/pinkish bubbly fluid squirted out... I guess actuating it stired up bubbles in it. I let it sit overnight and will re-fill again.

I need the boat this weekend, so I think I'm just going to top it off for now then take it to the Yamaha service center next week to replace the seals or whatever that's leaking.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks for following up. What fluid did you use?
