Posting this to see what you all think. On another site a gentleman was trolling on his kicker and it sounded like someone dropped a screw driver in it and died. Took to shop and took pics before - prop had some very small chips in it from some small gravel. Shop comes back and denies warranty coverage saying that the damage was caused by a prop strike. Shear pin didn't break. Shaft twisted, gears striped.

Its sounds to me like a piece of a bearing broke off and lodged in the gears causing the damage. The shear pin should have broke, or and the prop would show major damage before the drive shaft would twist - wouldn't it?

Any comments?

Repair bill is 1,600 on a one month old engine - not mine thankfully.

The engine doesn't cost much more than that brand new!! I would contact the merc rep directly before shelling out that kind of cash....you'd be better off buying a NEW one at $1800+/-
