I just bought an 05 tahoe 195, it has the 4.3 with the alpha one drive. The guy I bought it from has only used it a few times in the last two years. Is there anything I should/need to do to the engine/out drive before I take it out? It started right up in the driveway (with the use of ears of course) and I let it run for about 10 mins. I'm guessing I should change the oil but not sure how or if I need to do it right away. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Since you have no idea how long the oil has been in there and what condition it is in, why not change it. Why screw up a perfectly good engine by not changing 10 bucks worth of oil and a 5 buck filter. Check the plugs and replace them if necessary. There is an old addage that goes like this: Pay your mechanic a little bit now -- or pay him a lot more later. Pay him nothing if you do the work yourself.

change the impellor too as it may be bad or about to give up.if you look on youtube under mercruiser a few guys have posted good videos to make life easier if your willing to give the maintenance a go yourself.keep an eye on all gauges if your thinking of having a blast before carrying out maintenance and remember to winterize properly by getting all water out of block if your in a place that freezes in the winter.can be done in a couple of hours and can save u a fortune by keeping on top of everything.

Thanks for the help guys. I called a marina and they said they were going to need to take the carb off and hopefully not have to rebuild it too. Is that something I need to do too? I'm not so good with carbs. I figured I'd change out the fuel filters...if I can find it/them. I still don't have the boat, I'm picking it up tomorrow though. If this is anything like the tundra club I'm in, you'll be wanting pics....they will come. So, for now, just change the oil, oil filter and impeller. Hopefully I can find the filter and impeller quick, I'm ready to taker it out and I don't even have the thing yet.
