2005 Mercury 6 Hp 4 Stroke - Carburator spits gas thru the 2 air vents on top

This little engine ran 'perfect' the last time out (last week), and today it wouldn't idle for nothing.... when I took the cover off (in the lake), I noticed that after a few seconds of running, it would start spitting gas thru the 2 vents on top then die out. When I got home I took the carburator apart looking for obvious problems, and couldn't find none. So I put it back together got a garbage can full of water and started it up... same thing, after a few seconds of running, it started spitting gas from the top vents and died out.

Any ideas what this is from ? I reset the float and checked the valve and they seemed ok, but I'm no expert.... so any guidance would be appreciated.

Hello... has anybody ever experienced the condition explained before ? I'm certain this is not unique to my situation.
Any help or ideas would be appreciated
