Bob's jackplate 6" setback, 6" lift

With my motor raised up full 6 inches, the lower set of intakes (in front of prop) is still submerged when idling and/or under way, but the "upper" intakes, the bigger ones above prop are not. Engine pees strong, no overheating alarms go off (of course, my week old water pressure needle gauge is broken).

The only thing possible negative thing I notice when the engine is raised up fully is, occasionally, when I start it, I have to put it in neutral and rev it to get it peeing. This has never happened until the jackplate was installed. But, then again, I've never been in water this shallow with weeds so close to the intakes.

Is my motor ok to run with just the lower intakes taking in water?

Also, anyone suggest any quick fixes for the needle gauge?

While it does not sound like the mounting is too high when running, I would not advance the throttle to get the cooling water to flow.

Does lowering the engine (assume you have a power lift on the jackplate) prior to starting make a significant difference in how long it takes for the water to flow?

How high up is the anti-cavitation plate in relation to the bottom of the V when raised up?

As for the gauge, if it is a water pressure gauge, while docked at an idle, remove the hose from the back of the gauge and see if the line is clogged. If it is, clear it from the engine end.

Can't lower engine because I am so shallow; when I get out of shallow I've already corrected the problem, and haven't turned off/on engine in deeper water to see how it acts (YET!). Also, I haven't let the engine idle w/out peeing for too long. If it doesn't start peeing within 30 secs, I hit the throttle and it instantly starts peeing every time. I'm just curious why it is now doing that since I've added jplate--it's NEVER done that before.

Don't have a cavitation plate, have smart tabs;) fyi- boat is a flatbottom with tunnel. Prop is still several inches lower than tunnel when fully raised (and yes, it's hydraulic lift so I can play around at will).

Any other info you might need let me know. I'm going to run it this afternoon so I can test whatever you suggest...thanks
