2006 60hp BigFoot indicates Overspeed--I Think

This motor is on a 21 ft pontoon.
First off I'd like to know how the motor reacts when an actual overspeed occurs so I can compare that with what mine is doing.
Two times I have been going to WOT, at about the 5000rpm mark when the motor gives a single short beep and loses rpm. It does not quit and I can continue with no problem.
On one occasion I was cruising at a steady 4000, and it did the same thing. On this occasion I did notice that during the loss of power the tach had popped up to 6000 for a second before it came down. On none of these events did I feel the engine was overspeeding.
Any help in understanding what is going on would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same motor and for a while was using my back-up prop (14x9). This prop would allow an over-rev at WOT. Needless to say, I would throttle back when this happened but at no time did it loose RPMs. The alarm would sound a steady alarm for the duration of the time I was in an over-rev condition. Over-rev will occur at about 6200 RPM, not 5000. Your problem is something else and I wish I could help further I don't have the answers.

You say your losing the power and the Tach shows an increase of RPM? Does the motor rev when the loss of power happens. Like a prop getting ready to spin? or does the engine faulter along with it under the loss of power and the tach reading the increase? The rev limiterif a 4 stroke may be causing the increase in the Tach through the voltage regulator while the engine losses power. I cant see how if it,s a 2 stroke that the rectifier would make the tach increase as the flywheel slows. I,m not firmiliar with your engine just trying to help

The engine faulters with the loss of RPM..On one occasion I saw the tach bounce up as the engine was slowing.

Thanks for the reply. I've got a good idea now what an actual overspeed sounds like, and that isn't the problem. I think I'll get out on the lake and see if I can induce it so I can gather a bit more info.
