Re: 2006 90 E-tec on Sylvan 820 Pontoon
Hudson, WI. Near Twin Cities. We boat on the St. Croix River
My 2 stroke comment in regards to re-sale may need a qualifier. There are three types of pontoon owners around here from what I see. An older, cheaper boat, primarily used on a small or medium sized lake, is likely to have a 2 stroke and that's what buyers expect and may even want. Most of these are older, barge style pontoons and good for hanging out and fishing.
Then, you have the families with newer boats (perhaps 8 to 10 years old to brand new). They are not so much into fishing and want a little power for things like tubing etc. They are not the "hard-core" boaters and only think of bad things with 2 strokes, granted, much of it is unwarranted. My neighbor up the street....never owned a boat before, no way was he gooing to buy a 2 stroke with his new Bennington. Many of these people have cabins too.
The last group are the high-end pontoon owners. Keep in mind, if you boat on the St. Croix, you will expect to pay $4,000 to $5,000 a year for a slip around here, so any pontoons owners with this type of budget will always have 4 strokes. Spend 50 to 100k on a pontoon, it either has an inboard, or a 200 to 300 hp 4 stroke.
The vast magority of people fall into the first two groups.
I have had used and new outboards. Best experience was with a new one and was the worst.
Anyone know about Mercs issues right now? They are 7 to 8 weeks out on delivery if the dealer does not have a motor.
Again, if the dealer is willing to stand behind the motor, if it has a major problem you will likely know about it within the first few times out. Have it checked over. These things are not rocket science, but all motors can go bad or have issues.
