2006 bf8 intermittent ignition failure

My 2006 8hp honda bogs down and wont get any significant rpm. I have isolated the problem to the ignition system, as I noticed when performing a spark test that every time the engine misses, spark is not present. It will sometimes run ok for only about a minute, then goes back to bogging down then stalls. It alwasy starts right back up and only sometimes runs ok again, but never for more than just a min. The most confusing thing is that it seems random... Is anyone aware of common ignition issues with this motor?Or have any ideas?

Thanks,
Matt

Re: 2006 bf8 intermittent ignition failure

Welcome to the forums,

Have exactly same problem with a different engine brand, could be any of these : Exciter or Pulse coil, CD or Ignition Coil, which one is the dilema. Get yourself a Honda service manual and troubleshoot electrical readings if wanting to have it cheap and not resort to an authorized service station/dealer. Will need a good analog or digital meter to check readings while cranking engine.

Luckily for me have all mention parts so will start swapping Ignition Coil, CD which are fast to swap test until engine performs good. Probably a internal component failure or heat issue. Let's hope in both cases it's not the CD, are quite expensive comparing it's size. Like everything in life nothing is eternal, who said boating was cheap...

After a little more reading, I'm leaning towards some type of failure causing the motor to go in safe mode. Possibly thermostat, or temp sensor. Just seems like it fits the way it sputters then dies after about 20 - 30 seconds almost every time.

Don't know Honda 4 strokes engines, probably beeing so small, just an 8 will doubt if that model has a heat backup to go into safe mode, stated time is too small for a thermostat to shut engine down specialy if dying every single time at that specified time and assume at idle speed. If all mechanicl systems : tank, carb, fuel pump are in good working condition, looks like an intermitent eletrical failure.
