Not had that problem in mine, 2007, but if he has the theft deterrent system, it might have something to do with it.
In any means, being a 2006, still should be under warranty, take it to the dealer and let them sort it out.

In that system, it has to do with the key/s.
If someone tries another key in the ignition, it will shut down the system and not have any power.
In other words, the key/s are coded to that vehicle.
If you loose a key and need to replace it, you have to get it at the dealer and they have to program it is the way it was explained to me.

Anywho, if it has less than 36,000 mile on it, call the dealer.

Is it possible that by leaving the keys in the ignition the glow plugs stay on running down the battery?

Not unless it was left in the on position.
Don't know about the 5.9 but the 6.7 I have will cycle and stop so as not to burn up the pre heaters.

Take The Keys Out At Night!

Waste of time. Then you have to go hunting for the keys every morning. I suppose you could get into the habit of throwing them on the dash. Ask the mechanic at the dealer even if it's not under warranty. They will usually talk to you for free if you treat them nice.

Re: 2006 Dodge 2500 Cummins diesel

Just talked to my Ram 2500 Cummins diesel guru and he says that by leaving the key in the ignition he has everything on the truck activated in stand-by mode.
The whole truck, like mine, reads everything from that key.
He says that as long as he keeps doing it, the battery will go down.
Now, there you have it.

Time to get a different truck.
Naaaaaaa, it reads the key for a reason. Called theft protection.
If a key or any other object is put in the key slot that it can't read, it won't start.
Part of the theft deterrent system it has.
