Hi there everyone i just looked at a 2006 four winns H200 with the volvo 5.0L v8 and its not reaching top speed. it only goes 40-43 mph at 3500 rpm with the hammer all the way down!! it only has 82 hours on it. there is lots of algae on the bottom and on the out drive, the engine oil is overfilled, its running on last years gas and i think it has the wrong pitched prop. could these reasons be why its not reaching top speed. if someone could help me out that would be wonderful i just don't want to purchase a boat with problems. the engine bay is clean and i looked over the motor and it seems fine and idles fine.

Why are you looking at a boat that obviously was abused? Find another boat.

All of those are reasons that it isn't reaching top speed. None by themselves are that concerning, but you have to wonder if all those maintenance items were over looked, how many others are. Unless everything else is in tip top shape, I'd keep looking.

Assuming everything else is good to go - cleaning the algae off is easy (hard work and elbow grease, but not difficult figure out). Over filled oil can over pressurize the crankcase - but will typically come out the breather if too bad. Drain, and fill correctly. As for the prop, we need more specifics - size, weight of boat, diam and pitch of prop, are you sure the RPM's are correct, gps speeds, etc.

If the prop is actually incorrect, that alone could explain the lower than expected WOT RPM and speed.

did the engine itself run strong and just top out at that RPM/speed? or was it rough running in general?

Better make DARN sure the oil isn't overfilled cuz it's got a cracked block from a poor winterization and it's getting water in it!!!

thank you everybody for all the reply's. the boat is in tip top shape other than all the algae on the bottom(its in lake Ontario so you clean it and the next day its dirty again), the guy that's selling it hadn't even seen the boat this year yet or fired it up (its at a marina so they put it in the water) so that's why the bottom hadn't been cleaned yet. it started right up and idled great not a tick, knock or leak to be seen or heard. when the hammer was down and it was at 3500-3800rpm it ran like a dream no rough running or bogging. the guy selling it is an older guy so he doesn't do the maintenance on the boat he has the shop do it. my question is will the oil level different when you check it in the water rather than when its flat on the trailer? the oil is nice light brown (golden color) and not dirty or have water in it. its just overfilled. so i think the slow speed has to do with the algae, overfilled oil, and bad gas

I sure wouldn't count on that statement. It could have the wrong outdrive, it could be running on 7 cylinders, etc. Unless you are getting a huge deal on the boat, have them fix it before buying. Pretty simple.

Mine needed new spark plugs, cap and rotor to get to 4800 RPM after I bout it...before it would only get to 4500, still respectable and way off your 3500. I think there's more wrong but who knows till you have an inspection done. I dont always think its required but in your case, might be a grand idea.
