Good morning!

I have a 2007 50 hp 2 stroke, and the tilt/trim motor has an issue. I was getting the boat ready to go fishing and the outboard was in the full down position, when I went to trim it up nothing happened. I took the engine cowl off and I could hear a click on the solenoid (I think that's what it's called), it did the same thing trying to trim down, except the other solenoid clicked. I manually raised the outboard, and while pressing the trim button on the outboard, I tapped on the trim motor (part # 827675A1) and it started working, and has been working since. So I figure the problem must be with the trim motor.

I don't know if this is related or not, but during the winter when temps didn't get higher than the teens I had to take a heat gun and warm the trim unit up before it would work. Maybe that put wear and tear on the motor itself?

I can buy the motor online for about a $100 or so, but I am wondering if the electric motor itself can be taken apart and cleaned up, reconditioned or whatever. Or if it's worth the effort and I should just foot the bill and buy a new motor.

Thanks in advance for anyone that offers advice!

It can be taken apart, clean, lubed and work better , maybe
The tap on the motor may have made the motor work, but maybe the tapping also caused the relay or wire connection make a batter contact, don't know :noidea:

Suggest look real close, but you may need to work on the motor, but don't over look connections

AllDodge,

Once again, thank you very much for the reply!

That was a learning experience. I took the motor apart, a couple tablespoons of water came out of it when it separated. That would explain why it was freezing up in really cold weather. I left it apart a couple days to thoroughly dry out.

It definitely showed signs of wear and tear inside. I cleaned it up, put it back together and it's working, who knows how long it will be working is anybody's guess. Trim motors do get a lot of use. But now if it happens again, I'm much better prepared for it.

I've learned a lot from this forum, and really appreciate all the knowledge that is shared!
