Hello,

I have an opportunity to buy a 2007 Mercury 4 stroke 90 HP EFI.

In my research I have found the gas line issues.

http://forums.iboats.com/forum/engi...1-mercury-2007-90hp-4-stroke-efi-fuel-problem

The motor looks to be in great condition, I haven't gone to see and hear it run yet.

The price is less than NADA book value.

I believe this is built not he yamaha powerhead. My number one concerns is reliability. I do what I can to assure little to no issues.

Fresh clean, non ethanol gas, topped off oil, fully charged batteries. That has proven to serve me well.

I am aware that 4 strokes "make gas".

I guess my question is, after correcting the hose issue. Would it be safe to say, with proper maintenance this should be a good running and reliable motor?

I need it to be because the wide will never let me hear the end of it.

Thanks!

They Don't make gas -- they make oil but generally only if they are over propped and/or are idled for excessively long periods. Making oil means unburned fuel gets passed the rings and ends up in the crankcase thus raising the oil level and contaminating it.

Thanks Silvertip. I meant "making oil".

Actually just got off the phone with the guy. He says the motor sat for a few years and when he starts it. It starts fine, but does blow black smoke out the exhaust
and will die at idle.

Any ideas?

Thanks guys

First I would make sure its running on all 4 cylinders. You can do that by unplugging the injectors one, and see if the motor changes any each time. If it sat for a few years and was never winterized the vst might be gummed up. So check that its running on all 4 and check fuel pressure.

Thanks guys, I went to see it yesterday. It starts right up. but then quickly dies at idle. Will run with throttle and does blow some smoke.

The fuel pumps don't sound great. the last registration was 2011. The motor was winterized.
