2007 90hp merc optimax stalls after warmed up

I took my boat out for a ride the other day and it ran perfect until I got back to the marina area. Once I slowed down to about 5 mph there was some weird mechanical noises and it quit. Nothing had fowled the prop. It started right up but every time I put it in gear more weird noises and it stalled

i was towed in by a nice neighbor and after l let it sit for a while it went in and out of gear fine. But I didn’t go far as I was worried I couldn’t get back again

today I went back and it again went into gear and out fine no stalling... but I again didn’t go far as I’m afraid to get stuck again

could I have water in the lower unit?

i changed the oil last fall.

Any ideas?

the water pump is working fine engine temp was normal

It seems to have issues only when it’s run for a while? I’m going to have a friend follow me around so I can really test it but that won’t be for a bit

for crying out loud man, check the gear oil.....maybe you forgot to refill it after the drain?

Well that would have been bad… I actually just figured it out this past weekend. there is a small plastic bushing in the throttle linkage that was split. It held on to a metal arm just enough to work sometimes and not others. I had looked at it when this first happened as I've had one fail before, but it looked OK. This past Sunday I pulled lightly on it and it fell apart. I put a new one on and it all seems fine now. The weather has been too bad to go out but I'm hoping this weekend it will calm down enough. Thanks Though!
