2007 Mercury 50HP 2 stroke nosie

I just picked up this bass tracker yesterday and we actually went on the water and did a test drive. It was a little hard to start only initially, but I did not notice this noise. Maybe because with the throttle your not revving up and letting off quickly, but I also notice it did not do it when in gear, only in neutral when throttling up via the cable.

I will probably change the lower end oil after work today and check that since the noise appears to happen only out of gear.

It kind of sounds like some kind of bearing failing or something, I am hesitant to think it is normal when out of gear. I'm hoping its an easy fix, if its super expensive I might reach back out to the Previous owner, I did pay via paypal so that could be a plus on my end.

Take it out on the lake and run it normally to see if it does that. More than likely it is a misfire from you revving it up in neutral like that. Revving it up like that can cause damage and in know way shows you the health of a motor,

It did not yesterday on our test drive. But I will do that. I also noticed some oil residue in the airbox, possibly an issue with some reeds, which is an easy fix. I'll probably also pull the cars and give them a clean when I can and check the Reeds. If the rain ends today, I should be able to also to get a compression check. Thanks!

Oil residue in the airbox is NORMAL it comes from tipping the motor up and the carbs draining. Is not a reed problem.

Thanks for the info, sorry for late response, we were out of power all day. I got it out and once warmed up and in gear it seems to run fine. It was still a little hard to start and doesn't want to idle until a little warmed up. I know these carbs will have a pilot and it seems like it could be a clogged pilot. Weather has not bee cooperating for me to do much with it right now. I did check and 110 pressure on all cylinders with my cheapo gauge, I believe a lot of people say 120 on these, but I'm very consistent on all cylinders so that could just be a matter of my gauge accuracy. I did notice the same noise on the water when starting but again only happens in neutral. Also once warmed, it idles no problem, so I'm a bit hesitant to think the starting issue would purely be a dirty carb but its still worth pulling and cleaning.
Should there be any reason to be concerned about this noise? I plan to pull the carbs and give them a good clean.

I've been out on the boat several times since, and it runs fine WOT and even most of the time above idle. If i've been running WOT it will idle for the most part ok. If i'm running no wake zone speed, and then try to drop it into neutral and idle, this is where it runs rough. I suspect an issue with the reeds.
Can i pull the carbs and the reed blocks without replacing the gaskets to inspect them? does anyone know what reed/gasket kit part numbers I might need to look into this? 50ELPTO and I see another model number on the engine 1050412FD .

I'm guessing this parts diagram at http://www.marineengine.com/parts/mercury_marine_parts/sn/1B368975/1050412FD/11493_140 is accurate and I would need 3x #23, 1x21, 1x18. I think I would then need the 3 carb gaskets which I think would be 3x#12 on this diagram:

Anything I'm missing, could I potentially inspect these prior to buying replacement gaskets and still run them, or is that pretty ill advised?
