I'm looking at a 2007 Yamaha 4 stroke for sale. It has been regularly serviced but the seller says that a few months ago, it developed a leak. One of the new spark plugs rusted and it appears that the head has been weeping onto the spark plug. It appears to be a pin hole type of leak. He said that he spoke with a Yamaha dealer and said that the head would need to be pulled and repaired. So that leads me to a couple of questions. Is this something that is common and can be repaired easily or could this be a can of worms that I should I just steer clear of?

I appreciate your thoughts on this.

Unless you have a lot more detail I would walk away. Casting flaws are not a good thing. No - this is not a cheap fix if the head needs to be pulled. Then the next question is "can it actually be repaired?". If not you have a big bill for a new/rebuilt/used head. If I was in the situation I would not install a used head as you simply don't know it's condition unless it is rebuilt. If you a risk taker that's an option. You also need to consider WHO does the mechanical work. If you pay a shop to install a head that YOU purchased from someone, you get no guarantee whatsoever. My suggestion is unless you know exactly what you are up against, walk away.

If this is a motor run in salt water, you have no idea if the bolts will even come out without breaking off.
If it was an easy fix they would do it and ask more for the motor
