We have a 2008 305 EFI engine that will not start after doing some recent work such as repalcining a rusting oil pan and exchanging both the manifolds & the risers. It turns over, just doesn't start. So now we're going to start troublshooting from the beginning.

Can somebody tell me the correct firing order for this engine? AlsoI assume the cap is marked 1 thru 8, if not how would I confirm?

We'll bo doing a compression test tonight after work & I also wanted to confirm the firing order to make sure they were reinstalled correctly.

We'll also be checking the spark & fuel, then I'll report back and see whats next.

There's lots of extra variables with the efi. You might want to bring it in if you don't find something obvious. Good luck.
Let us know what you find.

#1 is not necessarily as shown in picture. #1 can be at any post as long as the rotor is pointing at it when the engine is at TDC on compression stroke.

I would double check that your fuel pump is on while cranking and that you have spark as well.

Make sure your man overboard leash is connected. You will still crank with that off but it won't run.

Re: 2008 305 EFI Starting Problems

Thanks for the help, here's what we found.

Started with a compression check and found all but 1 cylinder had between 160 -180 Lbs of compression, cylinder # 3 had ZERO....

I assume now we're looking at a rebuild.

Would it be crazy just to fix this cylinder or should the small block portion of the engine be compleetly rebuilt?

You probably have a bad valve if its zero...or a hole or rust in the cylinder. If its just a valve you may get away with just fixing that one head.

If the valve is the exhaust valve, you probably got some water in through your exhaust system. The fact that you just changed them makes me think that might be your issue.

How many hours on the engine?

By the way, it should still start missing one cylinder. You still are going to have that issue

If it's cranking and not hitting at all, you may have knocked something loose or not reconnected something during the repairs. If there is no spark check for wires including coil wire.

Agree with Bruce probably a valve

With an EFI check for spark first. If the primary ignition isn't working, it won't inject fuel.
I'm with bruce58 on the loss of compression. Other than a valve issue, you would need a large hole in the piston to get zero compression. Pull the intake and the one head, and see what's going on.

Re: 2008 305 EFI Starting Problems

Thanks for who replied,

The zero compression in the engine lead to having the heads redone, did both at the same time and everything is good again. Boat runs great and we're back out coughing fish.

When I saw zero compression I assumed a full motor rebuild or replacement, head job wasn't too bad.

Great Forum..
