Thinking about getting a 2008 Glastron MX175. What's the concensus on power for these. Is the 3.0 Volvo enough? What if you used a 17 pitch prop for those multi skier days. Is the fuel mileage that much better with the 3.0. Any advice or experience with these is most welcome. Thanks.

Re: 2008 glastron mx175, 3.0 or 4.3L

I just brought home my '07 mx-175 on Friday.
Dealer charged me $2200 for the V-6.
I put the first 2 hours on it on Saturday and I am so very glad I went with the V-6. No full throttle starts or runs but with about 3/4 throttle it jumped out of the hole. Followed the break in instructions but when the first two hours were up I ran it up to about 3800 RPM. That was good for 47 MPH.
And I still had about 800 RPM to go.
And the fuel gauge just started to drop from full.
Having a four cylinder in my last boat has really made me appreciate the V-6.
So far I love mine.

Anybody running the 3.0? $2200 is a lot on an entry level boat.

I have a 2001 SX 175 with the 3.0. It performs well, pops up on plane and does about 42 with a slightly dinged up prop, 4 people and a dog. Mileage is good and it is lighter to tow.

I think it depends on if you want to use it to water ski or not, if you do, get the 4.3.

I have a '07 Mx175 with 3.0 Mercruiser and i just love it ! Performances are really good for me but I had never used it for towing.
Those are my boat performance with two people on board and gears with the standard aluminum prop i think that Volvo 3.0 will have similar performances.

Max speed @ 4800rpm = 44 mphGPS (49 on instrument)
Cruise speed @ 3200 rpm = 25 mphGPS (28 on instrument ) @ 4.5 Gal/hr.

But what I really really love of this boat is the way it handle on the turns both at low and high speed.

I have a 2007 185 (same as the 175 but has the swim platform and more creature comforts). We chose the 3.0 because it was considerably better on fuel and we don't ski alot. I can honestly tell you that the 3.0 will pop right out of the water and has a top speed of about 46mph. I timed it...it takes 3.1 seconds to reach plane with 2 people and 4.6 with 5 people (1 in bow, 2 in back, 2 midship).

The hull design is very good for planing out quickly and the 3.0 seems ample for the boat.

However, it is a bit of a struggle to get a water skier up if they aren't real efficient at sking. You can't get a great hole-shot to yank them out of the water.

The big question is how much are you willing to spend on fuel for and increase of 4-5 mph top speed, and the ability to ski with less effort? We get incredible mileage. We use our boat heavily and 10-12 gallons for an entire weekend is our average. My old 19' Glastron with the 4.3 would be at least double that for the same useage.

Good luck in choosing.

Re: 2008 glastron mx175, 3.0 or 4.3L

I have a 2008 185 with the 4.3L. I was originally going to purchase the 175 and have the swim platform upgraded along with the engine. By the time I would do this it just makes more sense to get the 185 with the 4.3 I have driven both of them and the 4.3 was the obvious choice for me. I was worried about the gas consumption but it is really not as bad as I thought. I recently went on vacation with my family and spent almost two full days out on the water cruising around and I figure out of those days I probably had about 2.5 solid hours that were spent tubing, wakeboarding and kneeboarding not to mention that I did alot of exploring on a pretty large lake. I only used about a quarter of a tank. To me this is more than acceptable. I say spend the money now so your not sorry about it later. Most of the boats you will find out there for sale are with the smaller engines....there is a reason for this.

Re: 2008 glastron mx175, 3.0 or 4.3L

I love my 2007 mx175 with 3.0 liter. I pull single skiers with no trouble and often pull four kids on a six foot tube. In a few years I will most likely upgrade to a larger boat with the v6, but I would have upgraded in a few years with any boat that I purchased. Until the boat really starts to show some age, I can say that I am very happy with it.
Have any of you Glastron owners installed a wakeboard tower on your boat ?

I load the 2008 gt185 xl with 8 persons everytime i go out. Pulling a tube with a full boat or cruising i have never looked back...get the 4.3...get the 19.5 and get the 5 liter...the 4.3 has the power to deliver the performance u need ...fuel? It ur gonna buy a new $24,000 gt185xl u can afford the extra fuel for the few hours used each year...the swim platform makes the boat...never been easier to get in and out of the water...i am waiting delivery on a 14x19 prop for that extra hole shot...i never need the top end in performance and what little i loose will be ok...it goes plenty fast
