Hi,

I have a 2008-225 hp Suzuki outboard behind a 23 foot Pro-line Walk Around. I have been using the outboard for lake Ontario trolling at 3 miles per hour 95% of the time.
I change the motor oil and lower unit oil every 100 hr,as per the maintenance manual.
My question is, because I am mostly trolling at low rpm's,is it really necessary to change the motor and lower unit oils every 100 hrs?
If it is not necessary, how many hours can I go between oil changes?
Any thoughts will be appreciated.

Thanks.

Yes it is absolutely necessary to change the oil every 100 hours. Low RPMs can be just as tough on the oil as high RPMs, especially if you fish in cold weather.

Not sure if Suzuki is the same as other manufactures but Honda for example requires 100hrs for oil but 200hrs for filter, so if you looking to save $5 you can change the filter every other oil change.

A new 225 is almost $20,000, i would take any chances over a $50 oil change. Also make sure you using FC-W rated oil.

I would change the oil more often, like every 60 - 70 hours and change your thermostats every 200 hours when you do your water pump service.

And yes, as stated above, use FC-W rated oil.
