I am having trouble with my motor. It started by being hard to start. It will fire, run about 10 seconds, then die. I can keep doing that, it stays running a little longer each time and will finally stay running. I then get it out and it will not run past about quarter speed. Someone is saying the little black box on the side of the motor is bad, but it is an expensive part. Is there anyway to test it. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Dave Waters

Leave the electrics alone for now, sounds more like the carb is dirty and the choke system isn't working correctly.

posting a complete model # would help everyone know what motor you are dealing with.

I am guessing this is a prim start enrichment motor,
make sure the red lever is in the normal position.

carb cleaning may be what is needed, but hard to say from what you have given us so far,

yes you can test with the proper test equipment the peak voltages into and out of the CDI to see if it is doing what it should.
Checking the timing with a timing light will show if idle timing is in spec and then see if it is advancing as it should

service manual has all of these procedures and specs

Thanks, I will look into the carb issues also. The model is 50tlr, 6h5k L 1019475, year 2008. Does anyone have a link to that service manual? Appreciate the help.

you can get one from your local Yamaha dealer or order it online directly from Yamaha

I see Owners Manuals, but not service manuals on the Yamaha site. Where are the service manuals? Anyone know?

seems they have dissipated off of the web site.
Use to be able to see and order the proper #s for every motor

I don't know so much of other manufacturers, but Yamaha is making it almost impossible to "do it yourself" on any of their newer motors. Unless you have thousands to spend on diagnostic equipment, you are pretty much at the mercy of the dealer if you can't figure it out for yourself. Seloc manuals can be of some help, but you need to spend $ on testing equipment. Gone are the days of "got spark?" You can have spark all day, but if one single tiny "sensor" malfunctions, and there are MANY, you may spend hours and hours and still not find the problem. Unless you have service manuals, and diag. equipment.
oh, and I burned out my water sensor on the fuel filter with improper testing procedure, oooops, now if I don't unplug it, the alarm sounds in neutral, but stops when in gear. I don't even want to mention how much that little doohicky costs, omg. Parts are truly outrageous, but who am I telling? You all know that.
It really is a bummer, sitting here in the 90 Degree heat not able to take a cruise in my broken down barnacle barge. I am dreading the "trailering of shame" into the dealer, it has just about come to that.
