All the oil drained out of the engine when the lower unit was removed. Boat running great. Removed the lower unit to check on why a metal to metal sound only sometimes when shifting into neutral. Any ideas on what's going on?

Are you saying that all the oil drained out of the upper part of the motor ( engine ) or you found the gearcase empty when you had it off ?---------Any metal bits on the lower unit drain plug ?

Yes, the oil drained out of the engine above. No I don't think there were any metal bits in the drain plug.

Haven't tried. The boat is on my lift and when the oil drained out most went into the canal. Will pull it out of the water hopefully today. Will have a mechanic look at it. Just want some hope that it may be something as simple as a seal.

It does sound like it is expensive to fix.---Oil should not drain out when motor is tilted to remove the lower unit.---Any visible holes in the side of the block ?

No no visible holes. The engine was not tilted when he pulled the lower unit. It was down. The boat was on my lift and he was working from a floating platform.
