Hi guys, awsome site for boat information. I have a question, i just purchased a 2009 SeaRay 185 with a 4.3 liter Merc. I have 20 hours on it and just did an engine oil change, stern drive gear oil change and fuel filter change. I was told that i should not start this engine out of water, i was wanting to start it for a moment just to check the oil level, will this harm the engine? I have purchased muffs and will put them on if needed, just curious. Thanks in advance.

Use the muffs but do not take the engine over idle speed. Run it for a few minutes but check to make sure you have water exhausting out of the prop hub. If not shut it down immediately.
